Should ‘fidget spinners’ be allowed in the 11 plus exam?

Parents will surely be aware of the newest craze amongst children… ‘fidget spinners.’

These gadgets were originally designed to help children with autism, ADHD and other special educational needs, however now that these toys have become a global frenzy, parents and teachers are beginning to question their place within educational environments.

With exams placing children in a more stressful environment, parents of children with special educational needs may wish for their child to be allowed to use these objects to relieve stress or anxiety and aid with concentration.

It has been suggested that in general exam situations, ‘these objects will not be allowed as they are distracting and create noise.’ Fidget spinners have proven to distract children sitting in close proximity to those who are using one, which is unfair in exam conditions.

In light of this, it is likely that these gadgets will not be allowed in the 11 plus exams. However, it is important to note that the Birmingham Grammar Schools have existing processes in place for children with special requirements to make requests for adjustments to the test. Parents are required to submit their case and a panel will consider each child’s needs and requests individually. If a separate room, extra time, or an approved fiddle object is required, then arrangements are put into place.

Anita Dhunna, Director of Education at KSOL says:

“We understand the benefits of fidget spinners to some children and sympathise with parents who may feel it is unfair not to allow children to take these objects into an exam. However, they do cause distraction to surrounding individuals so they should not be allowed.”

If you believe your child should be allowed to take their fidget spinner into the exam, then our advice would be to make a request for special adjustments to the test. You must make a strong case for your child to be allowed to use this tool. However, you must also understand that doing this is not a guarantee that your child will be allowed permission to use it.
