What can online and one-to-one tuition do for your child?

With the rising population resulting in an increase in classroom sizes, more parents are turning to external tuition providers to secure their child’s education. However, there are currently lots of options in educational resources including online courses and one to one tuition. With so many choices available, it may be hard to understand what methods are effective and what might be the most beneficial for your child.

As individual children have different methods of learning, there is no simple answer as to what may work best for your child. However, recent studies conducted by the Centre for Education and Research Policy (CERP) has found that both online and one to one tuition can provide effective results. The following information will look at how and why these forms of extra tuition are effective although it is important to note that your child will always benefit more from services which are provided by certified professionals.

One to One tuition

Providing a child with face to face tuition on a one-on-one basis can lead to improved attitudes towards a subject and increased confidence. The most significant advantage of such tuition is of course the focused and individualised learning which might not always be supplied in a demanding classroom environment.  When a child is alone, they are placed into a more active and responsive setting so they will not get drowned out by other children.

The chance to expand on class work out of school also allows for more questions to be asked and mistakes to be made. This extra support helps children to build confidence and gives them the opportunity to go through the process of self correction which is another highly effective form of learning. Interestingly, the study from CERP also found that learners retained the positive effects of additional one to one tuition sessions in the short and long term. In addition, it revealed that 91% of students gained improved attitudes towards a subject and even improved classroom behaviour demonstrating the positive effects on school progress.

Online Tuition

Online tuition courses are a growing market so there is currently a lot of choice out there for parents and children. Research has shown that tuition based on structured programmes which is also relatively short in duration can improve educational achievements. According to CERP, the greater benefits can be seen when programmes of study are blended (eg: classroom learning or one to one tuition combined with additional online study) or supplementary to the main source of education.

Additional research found that online tuition should be purposeful, reciprocal and cumulative in order to provide the most effective results. This means that online tuition should take the learners needs into consideration and be constantly monitoring them so that the education provided is measured and therefore beneficial. It should also be reciprocal which means that the learner should receive immediate feedback and detailed explanations as to why a mistake or misunderstanding has been made. Finally, the tutor should review progress and achievements regularly to ensure a solid understanding of the material.
